Dover
was originally part of the Dedham Grant. In 1748, it became the Springfield Parish of Dedham, and by 1836, it was officially incorporated as the town of Dover. The town’s name was chosen by the chairman of the Springfield Parish committee, honoring his ancestral home in England. Historically, Dover’s economy was rooted in farming, with additional industries such as lumbering for shipbuilding, grist milling, nail manufacturing, and iron rolling. While much of its industrial past has faded, remnants like the Dover Union Iron Mill in Noanet Woodlands serve as monuments to the town’s industrious heritage.
